KADAYATTU THIRUMENI & VELUTHAMPY DALAVA
Kadayattu Tharavadu, Kundara, Mulavana,Kollam is the native place of a famous magician Brahmadattan Nampoothiripad. The Tharavadu is located near Mulavana School, Kundara Bharanicav road .Kadayattu Thirumeni was famous for jyothisha, magic and hypnotism. The name Kadayattu derives from kadam-ettu. The famous magician(Manthravadhi)lived during the period from 1735-1809.He was also addressed as Valiya Potti Unnithan(,Kadayattu valiya Potti). He was very dear to Marthanda Varma Maharjah of erstwhile Travancore and Velu Thampy Dalava his minister.Kadayattu Thirumeni had assured Velu Thampy Dalava that he will save Dalava from the British as long as he lives.
Veluthampy Dalava started his journey from Thalakulam now in Kanyakumari District,Tamilnadu to Kundara, old gosai inn now Police station,Kundara for his famous Kundara Proclamation. On 10th of January 1809 he reached chumadu thangy at Elampalloor temple ground. He went to see Kadayattu Thirumeni. But Kadayattu Thirumeni was already dead and therefore it is assumed that Veluthampy Dalava could not obtain necessary Tantra and mantras from Thirumeni to escape from the British who had decided to kill Dalava following his controversial Proclamation against British at Kundara.Dalava had presented his swords to Kadayattu family which is still being kept there as a monument. Kadayattu family was even empowered for execution of the guilty,to conduct parihara Courts and hearing of crime cases. The famous Kadayattu Tharavadu is still there where the 85 years old Devaky Amma one of the predecessors of Kadayattyu Thirumeni lives.Steps are on to modernise the old Kadayattu Tharavadu. family.
Veluthampy Dalava committed suicide on March 29 1809 at Mannady,Kadampanad now in pathanamthitta to escape from the British soldiers who had trapped him near Mannady Temple. The British had framed charges against Veluthampy Dalava alleging that he had conspired against the then British rule. A museum has been established at mannady,Kadampand in memory of Veluthampy Dalava the patriot who was not willing to buck his knees against the British.
